I want to erase everything on my computer so its like the day I bought it.?

My computer is slow, it constantly freezes, and I'm always getting error messages. I have AVG virus protection...I always do a disk cleanup and defrag. I've read to format c:/s, but I don't know ANYTHING about it or even how to begin. Could someone please tell me how to completely erase everything and start over step by step?
