My computer has a processing speed of 2 Ghz and 2 GB of RAM. But the cpu usage spikes to 70 to 100%

The PF usage has always been very minimum. Less than 1 GB. How do I disable the background running programs? But again I don't want to diable the virus protection or the firewall at the same time.

open/look at Task Manager, processes tab, identify program that is using too much processing.

Then you can remove it or terminate it (remember some process are important to windows and will crash it if you don't know what you are doing) ...or remove using add/remove program
