the best security system for a computer is to have anti-virus plus anti-spyware. it's always better to have software with real-time protection than without it. i use nod32 at home, but symantec client security i use at work it pretty good too. there are plenty of great antispyware programs, but i would recommend you to have spyware doctor, it has features like:

I agree with dubya b about using AVG, you can get it free, and it is a hardly known, but excellent Virus scanner and remover. It is updates nearly daily to keep it protecting you from everything out there. It can pick up a virus trying to attack your system within seconds of the start of attack.
