The best, in my opinion, is ClamWin (http://www.clamwin.com/).

It is open source and very light weight.

From the page:

ClamWin is a Free Antivirus program for Microsoft Windows 98/Me/2000/XP/2003 and Vista.

ClamWin Free Antivirus comes with an easy installer and open source code. You may download and use it absolutely free of charge. It features:

* High detection rates for viruses and spyware;

* Scanning Scheduler;

* Automatic downloads of regularly updated Virus Database.

* Standalone virus scanner and right-click menu integration to Microsoft Windows Explorer;

* Addin to Microsoft Outlook to remove virus-infected attachments automatically.

**It uses the open source ClamAV engine, which works on various unixes, and probably Mac.

AVG and Avast are free and they are good, but i would recommend that you should get McAfee virus protection because it is probably the best. I have McAfee and it protects your computer to the maximum so you will never have a virus. The thing will McAfee is that you have to pay, but its worth it because your computer may crash if you dont attend to your computer soon. that happened to my computer when i didnt have McAfee , now that i have it my computer is so protected and i scan it and it never finds a virus or spyware.
Personally, I use ZoneAlarm Security suite, but that's a paid service. I use as backup (and recommend to answer your question)
