Help! My computer starts programs at random times?

The computer launches programs such as Internet Explorer, control panel, My Computer at seemingly random times, and also shuts itself down occasionally (which seems like part of the same problem). Symantec Internet Protection 2007 is installed, up-to-date and running, so I hope it is not a virus. Any ideas?

its a batch file, which is a virus

some viruses cannot be detected by virus software, or they have alrady haked into your software and malfunctioned it.

Strangely, all the answers were completely wrong. The problem was actually a dying battery in the wireless keyboard - I found out the next day when the keyboard batteries died completely. When batteries were replaced, all worked fine! Report It

Install a secondary antivirus program, such as AVGuard, for free. These often find viruses Symatec does not. If that fails, take your PC/Laptop to the nearest IT shop and ask for a virus scan+removal for approximately 拢50 if there is a virus or free if there is not. Good luck with the first option!
It looks like you have a trojan horse now to see if im right reboot your computer and right be4 the windows xp boot screen pops up (that windows symbol and loading bar) press F8 on the key board and boot into to safe mode (just safe mode) then when in there run a virus scan and also try going to the start menu clicking run then type chkdsk and run that hope i could have been any help
G'day, something like this happened to me also. I likewise made sure my virus/internet (PC-cillin) was up to date. Previously, I was advised by an IT guy to run Adaware occasionally as well. Since I had not done it in a while I tried it and it found a few trojans and other nasties that were not found by my PC-cillin. You can dowload a basic version for free from www.lavasoft.com. Best of luck
You probably have certain programs, such as spyware or virus software scheduled to run at a certain time. Check the configuration of these types of programs.

Or, you could have a virus.
