Dell diminsion 2400, will crash and turn power off.

I have installed new anti-virus protection, new modem, all i have available for now is dial up where I live. had 256 ram installed another 512 have windows defender,spy bot S/D. I have windows XP home. Most crashes occur when trying to connect with internet but not always. Cleaned out cobwebs and dust bunnies, hooked up a fan blowing directly on inside of puter. Basicly done all I have been told to do. When I do connect I can be surfing and sometimes it will randomly shut down. Would love to resolve this myself if possible. My recovery disk has been lost or I would try to wipe hard drive and reinstall win.XP Please can anyone give me a helping hand with this. If I can find someone I would spend my dime on a call for the help.

Go to Microsoft.com and look up support for this problem. They will instruct you on how to read the error logs after an unexpected shutdown. Or how to make your system didplay the error type you are having instead of shutting down.

Your question is very misleading. You made it sound as though a hacker (which is an outdated term) is trying to personally break into your computer. That's apparently not the case. flash or thumb drives are just storage disks. for virus protection, you must have a operating system and software installed.
well there shouldn't be any virus on your flash drive unless you have a infected computer. so what i am saying its that you don't need any ''anti virus flash drive'' ( no such thing BTW , i think its just a virus scan that you can't update + auto starts when you plug it in ) your best bet is to scan the files on the flash drive when you plug it in.

For the size i would just suggest the smallest, i am guessing its just for word documents. 512 megs holds 1000+ Microsoft word files.
If you have a virus scanner on the computer then you can just scan the drive with that before you unload any files onto your C drive. The only benefit of having virus protection on the flash drive its self is that you will defanitly have a virus scanner everywhere you take it.

This is probably one of two things. The less likely one is that your computer is overheating. If you use it for a lot of demanding tasks such as playing games or editing large amounts of audio/video then you could be taking out the graphics card and causing it to overheat.

More likely, however, if it seems to happen totally at random, your power supply is probably breaking. First, look at where the power cord plugs into the computer. Make sure that cord is completely connected. As long as there aren't any loose cords hanging around then its probably the power supply. If you find you have to purchase a new one they are fairly cheap and universally compatible. Anyone with intermediate-advanced PC skills could probably put a new one in for you.

First of all, you should talk to your parents, they probably have a good reason for installing the web protection.

Having said that, it can be easily removed through a simple windows restore function. If you are running Windows XP Professional, go to your control panel and click system restore. I have anti-virus protection from Panda Titanium 2005. For about a year now, my e-machines computer shows a Windows error message at startup. Up until a few weeks ago, a different error message appeared at startup alongside the Window's message for about a year also until it somehow disappeared.

For example, the tab at the bottom of my screen is no longer highlighted to show me what my current program is--it goes back to the lighter shade (which can also be seen at the very top of a page--where it says the name of the website or file).

I'd install a second program like AntiVir (www.free-av.com), AVG or Avast (www.pcworld.com/downloads or www.downloads.com). I'd also put Spybot and AdAware on my machine and a good firewall like Zone Alarm. I absolutely do not trust someone else to safeguard my computer.

I have a Domain that has a server that accepts faxes using a 6 port modem. After considering it for sometime I am still unsure if this is a security hazard.

Is it possible for someone to dial into my windows firewalled machine pretending to be a fax and compromise my machine and network?

I have set up pretty solid security standards here and would hate to have such a easily preventable breach occur.

The way I see it is they would have to initiate a connection over the phone line, pretend to be a fax and then that line would be connected to my machine, which has no protection from the outside environment. I mean it is firewalled but I don't know if that applies to the fax port.

norton sucks because its a memory hog. It hogged a gigabyte of ram on my computer. Now the disk is sitting in a landfill.
How many programs do you have that run upon startup? This will slow down your computer especially when your not using them at the time. There is no reason for a program to run if your not actively using it. The only programs I let run from start up is my protection programs.

To disable programs from running on startup:

You're going to have to perform a jihad on your computer by removing all your installed software on your hard drive then reformatting your hard drive by wiping it clean to DOD (Department Of Defense) standards (this should insure that the virus is removed). Once that's all complete, you can reinstall all of your software. I don't envy you, it's going to be a task, but it's cheaper than buying a new computer. If you'd like, you may want to take it to BestBuy and have their GeekSquad work on it for you. Good luck.
