What the heck is wrong with this crazy computer?

Dell diminsion 2400, will crash and turn power off.

I have installed new anti-virus protection, new modem, all i have available for now is dial up where I live. had 256 ram installed another 512 have windows defender, spy bot S/D. I have windows XP home. Most crashes occur when trying to connect with internet but not always. Cleaned out cobwebs and dust bunnies, hooked up a fan blowing directly on inside of puter. Basicly done all I have been told to do. When I do connect I can be surfing and sometimes it will randomly shut down. Would love to resolve this myself if possible. My recovery disk has been lost or I would try to wipe hard drive and reinstall win.XP Please can anyone give me a helping hand with this. If I can find someone I would spend my dime on a call for the help.

THANKS in advance for all input.

Also along with these problems there are times when the CD-ROM will open and close ALL BY ITSELF. This is driving me nuts. Thanx for any help

Go to Microsoft.com and look up support for this problem. They will instruct you on how to read the error logs after an unexpected shutdown. Or how to make your system didplay the error type you are having instead of shutting down.

Eventhough this link does not list your problems exactly as you described them, it will give you the tools you need to capture any errors that are occuring that could be causing your problems.

How can i get around media(music) file protection to burn that file on a cd using nero 4 burning software?security

To turn off content protection when copying CDs

On the Tools menu, click Options.

    Click the Copy Music tab.

Clear the Copy protect music check box.

    Note

Content protection helps to protect tracks copied from CDs from illegal distribution. This feature applies only to tracks copied from CDs to Media Library that are Windows Media Audio files.

Firewall protection is key, it should stop hackers from getting in.

If you turn your computer off, they wont be able to get in, no.....but once you turn it back on, its open world to them

Just keep your firewall protection updated.
Your question is very misleading. You made it sound as though a hacker (which is an outdated term) is trying to personally break into your computer. That's apparently not the case. You either have a virus or spyware. If you do have either one, turning off the computer won't stop them. Antivirus and antispyware will.

I have a new computer and the Norton's internet security package that came with it. When I try to open an e-mail attachment, I get the window showing papers moving from a globe to a folder. Even after disabling firewall protection with Norton's help, I still can't open email attachments. Any tips?virus protection

well, you have two choices. it's either your firewall that is blocking, or try going through your internet settings.
get rid of norton...we had it when we got our computer and had nothing but problems...get macafee
Norton is probably the most problematic piece of software you can install on your PC. It is a resource hog but even worse it does what it wants to do not what you want it to do, which in my opinion is very deceptive.

Anyone knows a flash drive (1GB minimum) that comes with some kind of threat protection or anti-viru

I need to buy a flash drive for classes and work purposes and I am thinking 1GB or 2GB, maybe 4GB. Since I will be using it on any computer available around the campus and in the work office, I need a flash drive that comes with some kind of threat protection or anti-virus.

My biggest concern is to not to bring any virus to the company's computer!

I did a fast research on the web and the flash drives most consistent in my view were: SanDisk Cruzer Titanium 2GB, Memorex Mini TravelDrive U3 1GB (comes with U3 Anti-Virus Powered by McAfee) and Verbatim Store n Go U3 Smart Drive 1GB.

Your thoughts about these flash drives or any other suggestion?

You could use a U3 device, or get ClamWin portable for you usb, a little chaeper and works with any USB. You may want to check out some other portable apps too.

Anyone knows a flash drive (1GB minimum) that comes with some kind of threat protection or anti-virus?virus removal

Yes, CA makes one. You can get it at Tigerdirect.com, free after rebate.
flash or thumb drives are just storage disks. for virus protection, you must have a operating system and software installed.
well there shouldn't be any virus on your flash drive unless you have a infected computer. so what i am saying its that you don't need any ''anti virus flash drive'' ( no such thing BTW , i think its just a virus scan that you can't update + auto starts when you plug it in ) your best bet is to scan the files on the flash drive when you plug it in.

For the size i would just suggest the smallest, i am guessing its just for word documents. 512 megs holds 1000+ Microsoft word files.
If you have a virus scanner on the computer then you can just scan the drive with that before you unload any files onto your C drive. The only benefit of having virus protection on the flash drive its self is that you will defanitly have a virus scanner everywhere you take it.

One such is AdAware from LavaSoft. I use it.
You can download spyware doctor for free here http://1.mdzakri.com/index.php/2007/07/1...

    Both of these are free.

Spybot - Search %26 Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been ''hijacked'' (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S%26D is free.

    Windows Defender.

As far as e-mail, unless you are using outlook, most e-mail provoders have built in mail protection.

What is the difference surge protectors for computers versus those for HDTVs?

Some surge protectors indicate protection for computers and equipment while others say HDTV and their equipment. Is there any difference between the two or is it just marketing?

What is the difference surge protectors for computers versus those for HDTVs?systemworks

PCs are generally gonna draw more power. its probably a dummy way of telling you what level of protection it offers.

on the other hand, surround sound equipment can draw the power of 10 PCs...so maybe it is just marketing.

What is the difference surge protectors for computers versus those for HDTVs?windows

A surge protector is an appliance designed to protect electrical devices from voltage spikes. Surge protectors attempt to regulate the voltage supplied to an electric device by either blocking or by shorting to ground voltages above a safe threshold. Following text discusses specifications and components relevant only to the type of protectors that diverts (shorts) a voltage spike to ground.

A power strip is sometimes miscalled a surge protector, but provides no such protection.

    Important Specifications

Here are some specifications which define a surge protector for AC mains and some communication protection.

    * Clamping voltage - better known as the let-through voltage. This specifies what voltage will cause the metal oxide varistors (MOVs) inside a protector to conduct electricity to the ground line. A lower clamping voltage indicates better protection, but a shorter life expectancy. The lowest three levels of protection defined in the UL rating are 330 V, 400 V and 500 V. The standard let-through voltage for 120 VAC devices is 330 volts.

Be careful. When you click on it, instead of removing viruses, it will download more. It is a common trick.

Go to http://www.filehippo.com/ and download one of the free anti-virus programs, avast, avg, or anti-vir.They are all good, but you can only have one anti-virus program running on your computer. Then download some spyware programs spybot search and destroy, and ad-aware.
This is Spyware. Normally an executable called wininstall.exe will be placed in c:\

In addition running in the background is an executable that is a mixture of letters such as dsfhjfhjdsgf.exe

This changes each time the executables are launched. Furthermore, startup links are placed in the registry.

Close off your computer and restart it then rund add aware and once the scan is done select to remove the items it might have found and then close off your computer and then restart it. Always run these programs at least once a week to make your computer work faster and not be slowed down from having spywear you never knew existed on your computer. Got to:

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser.

you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus. i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar.

firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser.

as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE. download firefox for free, Just have a try:

AVG free anti-virus. IT DOES UPDATE AFTER 30 days and will always update. Im a Auth reseller for grisoft so i know their software inside and out. The Anti-Malware automatically updates and then after 30 day you have to do it manually. The free anti-virus will ALWAYS update it self. It only does it once a day on the free version and you can schedule it for every hour on the paid version. They have one of the bigger databases of know threats. You cant go wrong with AVG
    http://www.avast.com/
Among all freebies, I suggest Avast. IMO, it's better than NOD32 and AVG. Antivir is good as well. For free firewall, you can use Zonealarm.
