What the heck is wrong with this crazy computer?

Dell diminsion 2400, will crash and turn power off.

I have installed new anti-virus protection, new modem, all i have available for now is dial up where I live. had 256 ram installed another 512 have windows defender, spy bot S/D. I have windows XP home. Most crashes occur when trying to connect with internet but not always. Cleaned out cobwebs and dust bunnies, hooked up a fan blowing directly on inside of puter. Basicly done all I have been told to do. When I do connect I can be surfing and sometimes it will randomly shut down. Would love to resolve this myself if possible. My recovery disk has been lost or I would try to wipe hard drive and reinstall win.XP Please can anyone give me a helping hand with this. If I can find someone I would spend my dime on a call for the help.

THANKS in advance for all input.

Also along with these problems there are times when the CD-ROM will open and close ALL BY ITSELF. This is driving me nuts. Thanx for any help

Go to Microsoft.com and look up support for this problem. They will instruct you on how to read the error logs after an unexpected shutdown. Or how to make your system didplay the error type you are having instead of shutting down.

Eventhough this link does not list your problems exactly as you described them, it will give you the tools you need to capture any errors that are occuring that could be causing your problems.

Then probably NOD32

There are free anti-virus scanners availble. They work well. I like AVG the best of all the free anti-virus programs. If you are not currently running anything at least install AVG

To turn off content protection when copying CDs

On the Tools menu, click Options.

    Click the Copy Music tab.

Clear the Copy protect music check box.

    Note

Content protection helps to protect tracks copied from CDs from illegal distribution. This feature applies only to tracks copied from CDs to Media Library that are Windows Media Audio files.

Am i safe if i turn my computer off when someone is trying to hack in?virus protection software

Firewall protection is key, it should stop hackers from getting in.

If you turn your computer off, they wont be able to get in, no.....but once you turn it back on, its open world to them

Just keep your firewall protection updated.
Your question is very misleading. You made it sound as though a hacker (which is an outdated term) is trying to personally break into your computer. That's apparently not the case. You either have a virus or spyware. If you do have either one, turning off the computer won't stop them. Antivirus and antispyware will.

Even after disabling firewall protection with Norton's help, I still can't open email atta

I have a new computer and the Norton's internet security package that came with it. When I try to open an e-mail attachment, I get the window showing papers moving from a globe to a folder. It never ends, however, and even twenty minutes later it's still going at it. As noted, I disabled the personal firewall, and it still didn't work. Any ideas on how to open attachments?

turn off firewall is wrong, go to option and disable block dangerous attachement it will block all the attachement so disable it in norton

well, you have two choices. it's either your firewall that is blocking, or try going through your internet settings.
get rid of norton...we had it when we got our computer and had nothing but problems...get macafee
Norton is probably the most problematic piece of software you can install on your PC. It is a resource hog but even worse it does what it wants to do not what you want it to do, which in my opinion is very deceptive.
